New Employee Information

Welcome to RISD!

As a college community, we strive to achieve excellence and provide the best possible environment for students, faculty and staff. To that end, RISD endorses core values of diversity, equity and inclusion, mutual respect, integrity, collegiality, academic freedom, stewardship, service, safety and student success.

Required Forms for New Employees

You must complete Form I-9 on or before your first day of employment. Please make an appointment with Human Resources and bring with you original documentation that establishes your identity and ability to work in the US. Please refer to US Citizenship and Immigration Services’ list of acceptable documents and instructions for completing this form.

Policies and Other Documents for Review

There are certain policies that all RISD employees must be informed about as they are intended to uphold these values and others related to safety and privacy. Please take the time to read the policies listed below:

A full list of Human Resources policies can be found on RISD’s policies website. We encourage you to review and become familiar with the broader range of employment and other RISD policies. If you have questions, feel free to ask your supervisor or to contact Human Resources at 401 454-6606.

Newly hired part-time faculty only: Please call Margaret Lewis at 401 454-6591 or email at mlewis@risd.edu to schedule an appointment prior to the start of your class(es).

Employee Orientation

We aim to acquaint new employees with their duties and make them feel a part of RISD as quickly as possible. Human Resources conducts new employee orientation to support new hires as they transition into their positions at RISD. We encourage new staff members to attend the orientation session, where they will have an opportunity to network with other new employees, learn about RISD’s history and receive a comprehensive overview of benefit options.

Immediate supervisors and departments are responsible for acquainting employees with the specifics of their new position and with department policies and procedures. We also expect supervisors and departments to provide training appropriate to the position and individual. View the new hire checklist.

Emergency Notification System

The RISD!ALERT emergency notification system uses email, text and push notifications via the LiveSafe mobile safety app to send time-sensitive information to students, faculty and staff members.

While RISD email addresses are automatically enrolled in the system, we encourage users to designate a cell phone number to receive text notifications and enable push notifications in LiveSafe to receive those alerts. LiveSafe is available for download from the Apple App StoreGoogle Play and the MyRISD app, or via direct download.

Providence and Living in Rhode Island

RISD enjoys a great, longstanding relationship with Rhode Island’s capital, Providence. Known as the “creative capital,” the city is home to great restaurants, a lively arts and culture scene, charming neighborhoods and vibrant outdoor spaces, like the riverwalk that runs alongside the heart of RISD’s campus.
